The Center for Working Families, Inc. Receives U.S Department of Justice Byrne Memorial Planning Grant
Grant will support the development of a community-based approach to crime mitigation in the Peoplestown neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia.
Atlanta, GA (November 2015) – The Center for Working Families, Inc. with a network of partners has received a $155,522 planning grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to address the root causes of cyclical poverty and crime that continue to plague the Peoplestown neighborhood of Southwest Atlanta. Named The Coalition for the Revitalization of Peoplestown, key partners include the Atlanta Police Department, Mason West Group, The Art of Community and Dr. Keith A. Woods (Emory University).
Community partners include Peoplestown Revitalization Corporation (PRC), The Study Hall, A Trip to Remember, American Friends Service Committee, Talented Tenth, Atlanta Restorative Justice Center, One Step Counseling Center and The Annie E. Casey Foundation.
While Peoplestown comprises only 8.5% of the city, the Atlanta Police Department reports that in 2014 the police zone in which Peoplestown is located saw 32% of all
homicides, 24% of all burglaries, and 27% of the total aggravated assaults. “The DOJ grant will allow us to work directly with a body of committed community leaders to
develop a comprehensive strategy that will have a direct impact on residents’ safety and wellness in Peoplestown,” said Che Watkins, TCWFI President and CEO. “This dynamic
group covers a wide cross-section of critical support areas, from youth education to workforce development, all of which is greatly needed here. I am confident that the
outcome from working together on behalf of a neighborhood so deeply rooted in community will be greater than if any one of us attempted to do it alone.”
Through March 2017, the Coalition for the Revitalization of Peoplestown will execute a series of research, education and community engagement initiatives to ensure residents’ voices are
included in the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan.
